HO 73/3, extract from list of ways
police are useful. The authorities in London obviously found it very
useful to have the Metropolitan Police available for all kinds of
duties apart from tackling crime. This extract is just some of the
61 such duties listed in 1839.
In these documents, look for ways
in which the new police were finding their way, dealing with
crime and the public.
In Source 1, look for police actions which were: helpful to
the public, helpful to the authorities, keeping good order in
the streets, dealing with crime. Why was it a good thing for
the police to have good relations with the public?
