  T 1/331/32; a report of an incident from the Collector of Customs.This letter is from the senior Customs officials at Portsmouth in 1748. It describes what happened when customs officers went to investigate a Captain Gwyn, a Naval officer, suspected of possessing smuggled goods.
  As you read these sources look for
1. What is the government attitude to the crime of smuggling?
2. What evidence is there of people's attitudes to smuggling?
In Source 4…look for evidence of support for smuggling from (a) a respectable naval officer like Captain Gwyn and (b) ordinary country people?
