T 1/319; report on smuggling
from the Commissioners of the Customs to the Treasury. This is
a kind of double document. The left hand side describes a violent
incident off Hythe, in Kent, in July 1748. The right hand side
describes what action the authorities had taken to strengthen
the government forces.
As you read these sources look
1. What is the government attitude to the crime of smuggling?
2. What evidence is there of people's attitudes to smuggling?
In Source 1 what does this source tell you about the violence
involved, the scale of smuggling and the effort made by the
government to stop it?
Put some of the examples you have
found from these Sources into your Gallery Worksheet.
