Notes

This document is an individual assessment for the second collection of the subsidy ('relief') granted to Edward VI in 1549, for the hundreds of Webtree and Ewyas Lacy, Herefordshire. The document is dated 31 March 1550 and is endorsed with a note of delivery by John Garnans of the Middle Temple on 25 April 1550. The document, a roll of one rotulet made up of three membranes, has suffered some damage and parts of the text, particularly on the dorse, have become faded and worn. The heading, which reflects an appointment of high collector rather than a certificate of assessment, names the commissioners as Thomas Baskervyle, George Delabere, George ap Harry and John Seycyll, esquires, and John Hyde of Preston upon Wye, yeoman, as high collector. The signatures of three of the commissioners appear at the foot of m1 under the total with its elaborately decorated capital 'S' for 'Summa', and the signatures of all four appear on the dorse of this membrane. The first membrane of the roll contains the assessment for Ewyas Lacy hundred. The first place-name here is 'Trewalter' or Walterstone, although an entry for 'Walterston' appears later in the list. The first of these might possibly be the lost Walterstone in Vowchurch parish, Webtree hundred, as suggested by John Freeman, Herefordshire EPNS. Longtown appears as 'Longa villa' and Michaelchurch Escley as 'Llanvihanell'. In Webtree hundred, several places appear with Peterchurch, including a place-name 'Wyvscroft' or 'Wyvecroft'. According to John Freeman, this may possibly be a scribal error for 'Wellbrook', and has been indexed as such, with a query.
