Notes
This commemorative design honours the American philanthropist George Peabody [1795-1869]. Among the beneficiaries of his philanthropy were both Harvard and Yale Universities in the USA. In England he is best known for the Peabody Estates, social housing for respectable members of the working classes in London. A statue of Peabody was unveiled in the royal exchange, London in 1869.
