208750 - Josiah Wedgwood & Sons - 06 June 1867 - "Caterer" Jug

New Design in Class IV. "Caterer" Jug. Proprietors Josiah Wedgwood & Sons, Etruria, Stoke on Trent. [The design has been amended by the deletion of script.]

This jug is known as a 'Caterer jug'. It is usually found decorated with coloured majolica glazes. The text of the four-line motto has been deleted from the representation as such wording was not regarded as part of design registration. The motto does, however, appear on examples of the jug. 'What tho my cates be poor take them in good part, may you have better cheer but not with better heart', 'cates' being another word for food, especially bought food rather than home made food. The motto is taken from The Comedy of Errors by William Shakespere, Act 3, Scene 1.
