Notes
This commemorative design appears to portray Tsar Alexander II of Russia. Alexander was born in 1818 and ruled Russia from 1855 to 1881. The early years of his rule were a time of reform and improvement including the emancipation of the serfs in 1861. Following an unsuccessful assassination attempt in 1866 his rule became more repressive. He was murdered by revolutionaries in 1881.
