This design commemorates the partial destruction of the Arkady [Arkadi] monastery in central Crete. Cretan defenders, with the permission of the abbot, set fire to the ammunition store rather than surrender to Turkish attackers. 864 Cretans and 3000 Turks died in this incident on 9 November 1866.
