Notes
The vase at the front of the central design is the famous Portland Vase or Barberini Vase, a masterpiece of Roman glasswork, now part of the Greek and Roman glass collections at the British Museum. (Reference: GR 1945.9-27.1 Gems 4036). The vase takes its names from two of its owners, Cardinal Barberini in the 17th century and the Duke of Portland in the late 18th century. The Portland Vase has been repeatedly copied and reproduced by ceramic manufacturers, the most famous pottery examples being those produced by Josiah Wedgwood.
