National Government
7 June 1935 - 28 May 1937
Beset with ill health, Ramsay MacDonald stepped down as Prime Minister on 6 June 1935 and was replaced by the Conservative, Stanley Baldwin. National Government candidates were returned in large numbers at the November 1935 election and Conservatives formed the bulk of the Cabinet. A rebuilt Labour party formed the official opposition. Recovery from the depression was long and many industrial areas still suffered. The National Government also had to face two threats to peace - an aggressive Japan and a re-arming Germany.
