National Museum of the Royal Navy

  • Warrant, dated 14 October 1652, signed by William Constable as president of the Council of State for Oliver Cromwell and Parliament asking the Commissioners of the Royal Navy to fit out the warship the Armes of Medenblick for sending to the coast of West Africa. This followed a petition from the Company of Merchants trading in West Africa for Royal Naval protection against Dutch competition in the trade of gold, ivory and enslaved Africans. 1652 (NMRN 2023/114)
