Request and response
1. I would like to ask you do you have statistics about number of readers visits in search rooms in the TNA in the period 2002/2003 to 2018/2019? Do you have statistics about number of readers in search rooms in 2018/2019?
We hold reader visit numbers (people ordering original documents for viewing in the reading rooms) from financial year 2005/06. Please see the below table for these numbers.
We do not hold any data on the number of people using the open reading room or library as you do not require a readers ticket to use these facilities. However, prior to 2010 you needed a readers ticket to access all research facilities,
Please note, if a reader visited more than once within a year they will be included multiple times in the below table.
Financial year (01/04 – 31/03) | Reader visits (to view original documents) |
2005/06 | 78,408 |
2006/07 | 74,068 |
2007/08 | 64,050 |
2008/09 | 77,276 |
2009/10 | 80,446 |
2010/11 | 70,952 |
2011/12 | 70,635 |
2012/13 | 65,802 |
2013/14 | 71,682 |
2014/15 | 68,332 |
2015/16 | 65,859 |
2016/17 | 63,129 |
2017/18 | 61,706 |
2018/19 | 59,129 |
2. According to the Annual Report and Accounts of TNA, in 2018/2019 “Electronic records delivered to online users was 274,332,549”. I would like to ask what this statistics include? Does this data include access to digital documents on websites and Discovery or also access to digital documents in search rooms in TNA?
The statistic of 274,332,549 for electronic records delivered to online users includes access to digital documents on websites but does not include documents accessed on Discovery or in The National Archives’ public reading rooms.
3. Do you have statistics about the contacts with users of TNA excluding the data of calls to the Contact Centre and the Freedom Information requests statistics? For example, do you have statistics on how many of e-mails were answered by the TNA in 2018/2019?
TNA does not hold this information.
