Administrative / biographical background:

In 1835, some residents in Ipswich and district, decided to raise funds for 'an asylum for the Halt, the Lame and the Blind'. A Provisional Committee was set up for the building of the hospital. It was built in 1836. This was the first General Hospital for the district and was named 'The East Suffolk and Ipswich Hospital'. Over the years, the hospital was expanded.

In 1924, the Hospital Management Board took over the Bartlett Convalescent Home in Felixstowe, and in 1931, purchased 5 Lower Brook Street, Ipswich for a nurses' home.

In January 1948, the management of the hospital was taken over by the Group 4 Hospital Management Committee, within the Suffolk Area Health Authority, under the National Health Service Act 1948. The hospital was renamed 'Ipswich Hospital, Anglesea Road Wing'.
