Report of Visiting Justices to Gaol and Bridewell at Bodmin, of 13 July 1830.

1. Completion of all new buildings. Some repairs and alterations ordered for old buildings remain to be done.

2. Governor, having reported on confined state of the chapel, too small for the increased number of prisoners, and having suggested adding an adjoining room, previously a kitchen but now vacant, for reception of female prisoners, and re-arrangement of benches for the men, probable expense not to exceed £60, justices sought court's decision.

3. Plan and estimate submitted for the new drop over the main entrance.

4. Number of prisoners now "unusually great". "The Governor appears to omit no means in his power of making the Prisons a place of punishment ...". Reiterated the general good order and discipline.

Continued appeal by Penryn against order of 5 Nov. last for removal of Betsy Halvosso, wife of Nicholas Halvosso, and their children Mary Ann (19), Eliza (15), John (14), Frederick (7), Richard (5) and Amelia (3) from St. Gluvias. Stated that by indenture of 16 Oct. 1799, since lost, Nicholas Halvosso, then 15, was bound an apprentice, with consent of his surviving parent, to Thomas Bolitho, tanner, until he [N.H.] was 21. No money was given or contracted for relating to the apprenticeship. The indenture was properly stamped at 10s. Justices considered additional stamp duty of 10s was payable: order reversed, subject to opinion of King's Bench. St. Gluvias to pay Penryn £28.17s.0d. costs and maintenance.

Continued appeal by St. Cleer against order of 6 April last for removal of William Wallis, Jane his wife, and their children Mary (7) and William (4) from Linkinhorne. On 20 May 1809 the pauper William Wallis was bound apprentice to John Gadgcombe of St. Cleer, farmer. William Wallis served John Gadgcombe for about 7 years until John Gadgcombe having failed in business agreed to place William Wallis with Thomas Little of St. Pinnock, farmer. No official transfer of the indenture was made, but William Wallis in March 1816 went to serve Thomas Little for 9 months, with consent of John Gadgcombe. William Wallis then became "ill and disabled for service", and returned to John Gadgcombe, the latter having no accommodation for him, told him to go to his mother who lived in St. Cleer, promising to settle with her for her son's board and maintenance. A few days later John Gadgcombe visited the mother, promising to remunerate her. He also took William Wallis to a "medical Gentleman for Advice". William Wallis continued living with his mother for about 8 weeks, but during that time did not work for John Gadgcombe. Justices decided that for want of those 8 weeks' service the last legal settlement of William Wallis should be St. Pinnock: order reversed, subject to opinion of King's Bench. Family removed to Linkinhorne: Linkinhorne to pay St. Cleer £9.10s.0d. costs and maintenance.
