Report of Visiting Justices to Bodmin gaol

 

1. Completion and occupation of new bridewell

 

2. Repairs of old bridewell progressing, and separate sleeping cells being built.

 

3. Gaol alterations also progressing; gaol yard having been divided into three, for separate classes of prisoners. Previously undivided.

 

4. New tread wheel is in preparation, to be completed soon, and at small additional cost will enable mill machinery to be attached to it in the future "if desired."

 

5. When all alterations complete gaol will comply with Act, excepting separate division for juvenile offenders. Hoped that this will be remedied soon.

 

6. Good order and discipline throughout the whole buildings.

Application by Peter Sandry of St. Ervan, maltster, for allowance of duty paid on 135 bushels of malt, totally destroyed by fire, the duty being £17.8s.9d., and also for duty on other quantities of malt partially damaged by fire on which the duty was £41.7s.3¼d., the fire having taken place in his malthouse in St. Ervan on the night of 13 May last. Peter Sandry, jun., and John Kent, "two credible witnesses" said on oath, in presence of John White, esq., collector of excise, that 135 bushels had been totally destroyed, and 933 bushels were reduced in value by a quarter, also that 174 other bushels were reduced in value by a quarter, also that 174 other bushels were reduced in value by one half, and total value lost was £160.8s.6d: collector of excise to pay Peter Sandry £58.16s.0¼d.

 

Scire facias issued against William Bennetts of St. Agnes, miner, and his sureties, to show cause why recognizances entered into at Easter sessions 1822 in case of bastardy, should not be estreated.
