Following recent Act regulating granting of licences to "Keepers of Inns, Alehouses and Victualling Houses" dates and places of special sessions fixed for the various divisions of the county. Places were Penzance, Camborne, Helston, Greenbank, Truro, Ruanhighlanes, St. Austell, at the "Porcupine" in Tywardreath, Newlyn, St. Columb, Washaway, Five Lanes, Stratton, Launceston, Callington, St. Germans, Trecan Gate and Liskeard. Generally there were three to four sessions p.a.

Report on Bodmin gaol by visiting magistrates

 

Satisfactory progress reported on new buildings and improvements at gaol and house of correction. When finished will afford means of classification sufficient to comply with the Act, without necessity of committing certain classses of prisoners to Launceston gaol.

 

Vacancy of under-turnkey's position reported. Proposed to increase salary from £25 to £30 "no responsible person being found willing to accept the situation at the former sum."

 

Quarter's expenditure stated to be satisfactory.

 

Approval given to new system of "dieting the Prisoners" making considerable saving.

 

Reported improved management and discipline throughout building under "zealous superintendance of the New Governor".

 

Visiting magistrates of county gaol at Launceston had nothing particular to report, gaol being in very good repair. Only one prisoner sentenced at Lent assizes imprisoned for [...] years.

Edward Oliver of Liskeard, lab., and Margaret his wife, and William Bray of Liskeard, lab. and Catherine his wife, indicted for assault on William Hodges, a petty constable of Liskeard, in the execution of his duty: William Bray received two months' hard labour in the house of correction at Bodmin as did Margaret Bray. Edward Oliver and Margaret Oliver: one month's hard labour in house of correction.

John Michell, Henry Michell, Frederick Michell, Richard Michell, James Stephens, John Reed, Thomas Stephens and James Knuckey, all of Gwennap, labourers, indicted for assault on James Jenkin: James Stephens, John Reed and James Knuckey all acquitted. The four Michells imprisoned at Bodmin (1) for six weeks and fined £5, to remain in custody until fine paid and (sic) Henry Michell, Frederick Michell and Richard Michell be imprisoned in the house of correction at Bodmin (2) for six weeks.
