QS/1/11/353,354, 355 Report on Bodmin gaol Visiting magistrates of Bodmin gaol reported that drains, ordered last year, nearly finished, greatly improved atmosphere in the gaol, and consequently in the health of the prisoners. "There is a large Reservoir of Water at the head of the Drains, by means of which they may be entirely cleansed daily." Since appointment of new governor many necessary repairs had been made and a contract to repair the dilapidated roof drawn up. New arrangements to be made for classification of prisoners to effect new system of management. A new kitchen provided, where all prisoners to be served with allowance of food instead of cooking "for themselves at large Fires which were kept constantly burning in their day rooms." A laundry wash-house had been provided, where women sentenced to hard labour, would wash for the prisoners. This work would occupy almost all female prisoners. The apartment, previously occupied by the matron, to become the governor's office, from which he could see everyone who came into, or went out of, the gaol and house of correction. By building up the doorway of the Debtors' Ward and opening a way through into the gaol, the entrance to the debtors' prison would also be under the surveillance of the governor. Reported that only new building necessary would be raising the infirmary roof, ordered at last sessions; also that since appointment of Mr. Everest a marked improvement in manner and conduct of prisoners had taken place. More efficient turnkeys and gaol servants to be appointed by the court. Expected that due to abolition of fees and perquisites, great saving would be made in annual expense.
