This image shows the impression of a seal used by the Guardians of Scotland during their period of rule (1286-91). The royal arms of Scotland are on one side, and St Andrew on his saltire cross on the other. No image of a monarch is depicted, since there was no reigning king or queen, but both images are strong symbols of Scottish independence and nationhood.
