Captain James Joseph Bernard JACKMAN

On 25 November 1941 at ED DUDA, SOUTH EAST of TORBRUCH, Captain J.J.B. JACKMAN showed out-standing gallantry and devotion to duty aboveall praise when he was in Command of Z.M.G. Coy,1 Royal Northumberland and Fusiliers in support of the tank attack on ED DUDA ridge. Hismagnificent bearing was contributory in a large measure, to the success of a mostdifficult and hard fought action. As the tanks reached the crest of the rise they were met by extremely intense fire from a largenumber of guns of all descriptions – the firewas so heavy that it looked doubtful for a moment, whether the Brigade could maintain its hold on the position. Then tanks quickly eased down to ‘hull-down'positions and settled down to beat the enemy fire down. Whilst this was going on CaptainJACKMAN rapidly pushed up the ridge leading his M.G. trucks.

He at once saw that A/Tk guns were firing at the flank of the tank attack as well as the rows of batteries which the tanks were engaging on their front. He immediately started to get his guns intoaction as calmly as if on manoeuvres and so secured the right flank. Then standing up in the front of his truck with calm determination he lead his other trucks across the front, between the tanks and the guns (- there was no other road-) toget them in action on the left flank.

Brigadier A.C. WILLISON, DSO. M.C. Comdr., 32 Army Tk. Bde.

Immediate Award of Victoria Cross.
