"Keyes" WO 373/19 folio 229

ZoomEnlargeTranscript

planned, during the weary days spent in waiting for the expedition to sail and up to the last moment when I saw him 250 miles behind the enemy lines heading for almost certain death, I was profoundly impressed by his confidence and determination to face unlimited danger.

Colonel Keyes' outstanding bravery was not that of the unimaginative bravado who may be capable of spectacular action in moments of excitement but that far more admirable calculated daring of one who knew only too well the odds against him.

That he was aware of danger I have no doubt from previously discussing the operation with him and from his description of his former brilliant action at Litani River but that he could ever allow fear to influence his action for one single second is unthinkable to anyone who knew Geoffrey Keyes.

C.J. Auckinleck, General Commander-in-Chief Middle East Forces
