He knew the raid had to be done, he knew the casualties would be severe, he knew that his personal chances of return - as leader of the raid – were extremely slender. Such dauntless courage in the face of such odds deserves in my opinion the highest award and is in direct keeping with the great traditions of the Royal Air Force.

I am therefore most happy to recommend him for an award of the VICTORIA CROSS.
