Was largely responsible for the planning of the operation. The vital element of surprise having failed it developed into an enterprise of desperate hazard, but although blinded in one eye he led his force to their objectives through point blank fire from shore batteries and ships in harbour. His courage and leadership achieved all that could be done against odds that proved overwhelming. His bearing was most admirable when he subsequently led his surviving officers and men, conducted as prisoners through the streets to prison many of them wounded, soaked it oil fuel and barefooted.
