Yesterday I saw TREASURE at 39 Hill Street in the presence of Miss Sherer.
I said that I had come to deliver a very serious talk as I had, during
the past few days, formed definite opinions with regard to her case. I
said that we had already taken over the transmitter and were imitating
her and that in future she would not be required to assist us in this
way. I pointed out that my reasons for coming to this conclusion were
two-fold:
1) that I had heard from Miss Sherer that TREASURE had been to Lisbon
in order to and had fixed up with KLIEMANN a signal or signals
which would appear in her messages indicating whether or not she was
working under control, and
2) that from a reliable source it had been reported that while in Lisbon
she had fixed up a means of communication with a German Intelligence
Officer without this coming to our notice.
I pointed out that it was quite impossible for me to place any confidence
in someone who behaved in this manner.
I then said that we would pay her £5. a week as from Monday next,
and that if she decided to have an operation, we would undertake to
pay all expenses. At the same time we would clear up any outstanding
doctors’ bills. I also said that we would endeavour, although
I made no promise whatever, to send her at some future date, either
to her sister in Algiers or to her family in Paris, if conditions made
this possible.
I pointed out, however, that if I had any cause to think that she was
being indiscreet or was in any way acting contrary to the interests
of the Allied cause, I would at once take severe action, and would either
put her into prison or hand her over to the French authorities who would
no doubt deal with her pretty severely. I also said that naturally any
allowance in the shape of money which I was making to her would cease.
In addition, I said that we might occasionally wish to consult her over
some point in connection with the traffic and that I expected her to
give us every assistance. I also asked her to make arrangements to leave
39 Hill Street within the next fortnight.
Before leaving, I made quite certain that she had understood what I
had said and asked her if she had anything to say. She had nothing to
say except that she did not want the money. I said that she would take
it whether she liked it or not, and that she could do what she liked
with it.
