Defence Intelligence Staff

The Defence Intelligence Staff (DIS), part of the Ministry of Defence (MOD), is an essential element of the UK’s national intelligence machinery. Created in 1964 by the merger of the separate service intelligence staffs and the civilian Joint Intelligence Bureau, DIS forms an integrated body supporting the Ministry of Defence, the Armed Forces and other Government Departments.
Its primary role is to analyse intelligence gathered by both covert and overt means and provide assessments and strategic warning to the JIC and the British Armed Forces.
