Ivan Bolshakov (KV 2/3105) 1945-1957

Bolshakov had been identified by the defector Igor Gouzenko as being in charge of the American Division of Red Army Intelligence at the end of the Second World War. Therefore he and his wife, Asya, were watched carefully when he transited Britain in 1948 to take up a post in Washington as the Soviet military attaché. Gouzenko confirmed his identity from a photograph in 1949, and this file principally relates to efforts to establish that the Bolshakov who went to Washington was indeed identical with the man previously known to Gouzenko. Today, the most interesting aspect of this file is perhaps the detail of the Bolshakov family's luxurious travelling arrangements. Copies of their landing cards are on the file, which confirms that when Bolshakov was recalled to Moscow in November 1949, while he flew home, his family travelled on the SS Queen Mary.
