Malaya

The Cabinet discussed the situation in Malaya throughout 1946.  The Rulers of the Malay States had agreed to cede to His Majesty full power and jurisdiction in their States so that the UK government could introduce their policy for the creation of a Malayan Union and the establishment of common citizenship.  However, the Rulers sought to go back on this agreement and asked for an independent mission to be sent to consult the Sultans.  Opposition over the common citizenship was being voiced by the Malayan people because they believed that the scheme would result in the submergence of the Malays in their own country by the Chinese and Indian populations.
