Please find below more detailed information about our three short training courses in records and information management.
All courses listed here are held at our building at Kew. Tea and coffee will be provided, but not lunch. Attendees are welcome to use The National Archives' restaurant.
Introduction to the public records system
This module is intended for staff who are involved in the appraisal, management and processing of records. The aim is to provide a framework on which to build the knowledge, expertise and skills necessary to perform all the functions associated with the management of public records.
The course programme covers the role of The National Archives and a brief introduction to the legal framework. The afternoon includes a brief overview of the transfer and cataloguing process and a tour of the Archives' reading rooms and repositories.

Cataloguing
This module is intended for staff responsible for the preparation of lists of records selected for permanent preservation in The National Archives. The course will include an overview of the transfer process and practical exercises in cataloguing.
NB: The Cataloguing and Preparation for Transfer courses are run on the same day and it is usual for delegates to attend the two courses together.
The objectives are: To enable staff in departments to create catalogues of their records that meet the required standard for inclusion in the National Archives online Catalogue. More detailed training in the principles of archival description are covered in the professional studies programme.
This course is only open to staff working in departments who list/transfer records to The National Archives.

Preparation for transfer
This module, which will include practical demonstrations, is intended for staff responsible for the physical preparation of records for transfer to The National Archives or other places of deposit. The aim is to encourage staff to prepare records to standards which will ensure their continued survival by the use of effective and economic techniques.
NB: The Cataloguing and Preparation for Transfer courses are run on the same day and it is usual for delegates to attend the two courses together.
This course does not provide detailed guidance on the storage of records within the department. This is included in the professional studies programme.
This course is only open to staff belonging to departments who list/transfer records to The National Archives.
