Selecting records

Selection and disposition

The criteria for selecting public records for The National Archives and other archives are set out in the acquisition and disposition strategy. The strategy defines which records will be selected for permanent preservation and whether they are kept at The National Archives or offered to other archival institutions.

The Acquisition and Disposition policies are implemented through the development of Operational selection policies (OSPs).

The Appraisal policy defines the methods used to determine which government records are worthy of permanent preservation.
