Digital microfilm allows you to search and download some of The National Archives' most popular records, which were previously available on microfilm. We have a large collection of microfilmed records, which we have now made more accessible by making them available online. This will eventually allow the microfilm readers used in The National Archives' reading rooms to be retired. Many of the records are indexes, which will be helpful in locating other relevant records.

These documents are free of charge to download and are delivered as large pdf files. Please be aware that each download contains a whole piece, which could be up to 800 pages long. This means that digital microfilm is only available to online users with a broadband connection, and to users in the reading rooms at The National Archives at Kew.

Searching the records

Digital microfilm means that we have made entire pieces available free of charge. We have not indexed the detail within the records and so you cannot search them in the same way as you can search for a medal card, for example. Instead you will need to scroll through the pdfs, much as you would when using a microfilm.

You can search for the full catalogue reference, for example WO 144/1, using our catalogue.

Use our catalogue to search for the files. In the table below we have included a link to the catalogue entry for each collection to help you with your search. Browse by reference or use advanced search to identify the piece which is of interest to you. You can then download the pieces you require from Discovery, our catalogue. Please note that with most of the items below only part of the series is available online, not the whole series.

Technical requirements

These files are very large and it may take your computer some time to download each file. They are on average 400MB in size. Once you have downloaded the pdf file, we recommend that you save the document to your computer for future reference.

To view the pdfs you will need to have Adobe Reader installed on your computer, which can be downloaded free of charge.

When printing from these files specify which page numbers you would like to print, as many are up to 800 pages long in total.

Issues with downloading large files

Some users are experiencing problems with our digital microfilm collection. The nature of this collection (digitised browseable indices) means that the files are much larger in size than the rest of our digital content, and computers with limited memory may struggle to open them.

We are recommending that users save the document to their hard drive before attempting to open it. Users with Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome should right-click and select 'Save link as'. For Microsoft Internet Explorer users, right-click and select 'Save target as'. For Mac users, click the mouse while pressing the control button on the keyboard simultaneously - a pop-up box should appear, allowing users to save the files. If you are still experiencing problems, contact our helpdesk team.
