Staff records can be used to provide essential information for local historians. Depending on the nature of information contained in the records used, local historians can analyse such local trends as:

  • Length of employment in particular trade/jobs
  • Wage levels
  • Disciplinary action by managers
  • Staffing numbers

We have a limited series of staff records. These can range from simple lists of names to quite detailed registers, which provide information on a person's full service including salary, promotions and 'general comments'. Some occupations are well represented. Examples include:

  • Railway workers
  • Workhouse staff
  • Customs and excise officers
  • Metropolitan Police officers
  • Royal dockyard workers

Where records cover different localities over the same time periods, local historians have the opportunity to make use of such records when undertaking a comparative study.
