23rd April Germans used powerful asphyxiating gases very extensively in
attack on French yesterday with serious effect aaa Apparently these
gases are either chlorine or bromine aaa Will send further details
later but meanwhile strongly urge that immediate steps be taken to supply
similar means of most effective kind for use by our troops aaa Also
essential that our troops should be immediately provided with means of counteracting
effects of enemy gases which should be suitable for use when on the move
aaa As a temporary measure am arranging for troops in trenches to
be supplied with solution of bicarbonate of soda in which to soak handkerchiefs
