Cardiff: meetings for and against conscription

Leaflets advertising a patriotic citizens' meeting and an anti-conscription meeting in Cardiff, 10 and 11 November 1916.

These two leaflets provide an insight into the bitterly conflicting emotions aroused by pacifism in wartime Britain. The first advertises 'A Great Patriotic Citizens' Demonstration' to be held in Cardiff on 10 November 1916. It was organised in response to a 'peace conference' already planned for the following day by the National Council for Civil Liberties (and advertised in the second leaflet). After failing to get this latter meeting prohibited under the terms of the Defence of the Realm Act, 'patriots' stormed the conference hall, forcing the speakers off the stage and tabling a resolution calling for the war to be prosecuted 'to the bitter end'.
