poster featuring Edith Cavell, undated. The German army executed the British Red Cross nurse Edith Cavell in Brussels on 12 October 1915 on charges of espionage and helping prisoners to escape. The case became an Allied cause célèbre. An international propaganda campaign was quickly organised to publicise the latest example of German wartime brutality. This British recruitment poster unashamedly uses a picture of Cavell, beneath the emotive caption 'Murdered by the Huns', to encourage men to enlist for military service. IWM Q 106364 Transcript |
