The name of Louis Mountbatten,
the British naval leader and last viceroy of India, is most readily
associated with the Second World War. However, as his detailed service
record illustrates, Mountbatten's career in the Royal Navy stretched
back as far as 1913. He served first as a midshipman and then as an
acting sub-lieutenant during the First World War, earning the praise
of his superior officers as 'keen and intelligent' and of 'Ab Av'
('above average') ability.
