Extract from the Register of Deceased Seamen, May
1915.
The Register of Deceased Seamen encompassed a truly international
cast list. This extract alone records the deaths of men from Denmark,
England, Holland, Hong Kong, India and Scotland. Drowning was the
cause of the majority of the deaths listed here, though there are
also cases of fatal illness and one man who died of bullet wounds.
A number of the casualties were working on ships that were 'sunk
by [the] enemy'. This probably refers to merchant vessels that were
attacked by German submarines - a controversial policy that was
only employed intermittently by the German navy at this stage in
the conflict.
