Extract from the war diary of the
3rd Battalion, 1st Regiment of the King's African Rifles (KAR) in East Africa,
3-13 December 1917.
Although commanded by British officers, the King's African Rifles drew its
rank and file from the black African population of Sudan and Central Africa.
Many KAR units served in the long campaign against German forces under Paul
von Lettow-Vorbeck in East Africa. This war diary extract from the 3rd Battalion,
1st Regiment covers a 10-day period in December 1917, shortly after Lettow-Vorbeck
- as noted in the diary entry of 3 December - had withdrawn all of his men
from German East Africa into neighbouring Portuguese East Africa.
