Dominion forces: 1st Canadian Division

Photograph of infantry troops from the 1st Canadian Division in the trenches at Ploegsteert, 20 March 1916.

The 1st Canadian Division first saw action on the Western Front in February 1915 and quickly earned praise for its bravery under gas attack at the 2nd Battle of Ypres two months later. This photograph was taken in the trenches at Ploegsteert (known as 'Plug Street' to many Allied soldiers), a wood in the Ypres salient on the Franco-Belgian border. Note the extensive use of sandbags, the mud and the bayoneted rifles.
