Notes and sketch map by Colonel T E Lawrence of the terrain between Azrak and the Hejaz railway, undated (1918).

In 1916, T E Lawrence - better known as 'Lawrence of Arabia' - had played a decisive role in facilitating the Arab revolt against Ottoman rule in the Middle East. Arab raids launched under his command quickly put out of action large sections of the Hejaz railway - the principal railway connecting Syria, Damascus and Medina. In these notes and rough map, prepared for the War Office in 1918, Lawrence gives a detailed topographical description of the land around the village of Azrak (Azrac)map in preparation for possible Allied 'landings' in the area.
