Germans advance towards Russia

Photograph by Gustav Lachmann of a German regiment crossing the River Swienta during the advance towards Russia, 4 August 1915.

Gustav Lachmann served as a cavalryman in the 24th Leib-Dragoner Regiment, which was transferred from Belgium to the Eastern Front in April 1915. This photograph, taken from an album of Lachmann's photographs held at the Imperial War Museum, shows the regiment crossing the River Swienta on horseback during its advance through Lithuania in the spring and summer of 1915 - an advance that culminated in the capture of the Lithuanian capital Vilna on 18-19 September.
