Extract from a report by General Wagstaff
on the performance of American Expeditionary Force (AEF) troops in the fighting
at the Saint Mihiel salient, 16 September 1918.
Between 12 and 16 September 1918, twenty AEF divisions attacked positions
held by eight German divisions on the Saint Mihiel salient on the River
Meuse. It was the first major American offensive of the First World War,
and provided a relatively comfortable and morale-boosting victory. In this
report, General Wagstaff, an army officer with the British mission at AEF
headquarters, gives a largely favourable account of the AEF's performance
against albeit depleted German forces. His only real note of criticism is
the 'shocking horsemastership [sic]' of the AEF troops.
