Turkish war memorial

Photograph of the Turkish war memorial at Cape Helles, Gallipoli, 25 April 1965.

66,000 Turkish soldiers troops lost their lives in the defence of Gallipoli between March 1915 and January 1916. This imposing memorial, built by the Turkish Republic, is situated on the southern tip of the peninsula at Cape Helles, the scene of fierce fighting after the Allied landings on 25 April 1915. The photograph shows Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (Anzac) veterans eating a picnic lunch in the sunshine, while listening to the music of a Turkish military band.
