The Act of Union with Ireland originated in the difficulties experienced
by Britain in governing Ireland, and was designed to give Britain
greater security during the war with France. The Irish Parliament
was abolished and power transferred to Westminster, where Irish MPs
had 100 seats (Protestant MPs in the Irish Parliament were offered
titles and honours to persuade them to pass the Bill). Reproduced
here is a record of the first meeting of Parliament following the
Act of Union - George III now being referred to as king of the United
Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
