This is a print of a design for paper hangings at the Great Exhibition
of 1851. The exhibition provided a showcase for the British empire
and was visited by 6.2 million people. Among the 13,000 displays were
exhibits from the four corners of the empire. Note how the picture
fuses together English and Far Eastern landscapes. At the centre is
the Crystal Palace, which was built in Hyde Park to house the exhibition.
