After making his fortune in manufacturing, Joseph Chamberlain (1836-1914)
devoted his life to politics. As mayor of Birmingham he embarked on
a policy of municipal socialism, providing social housing and free
public libraries. Elected MP for Birmingham in 1876, he took his policies
of social reform to Westminster, became a Cabinet minister, and was
a strong supporter of imperialism.
