Letter to Sir Charles Holt requesting him to take steps to apprehend
nonconformist ministers preaching in and around Birmingham. The degree
to which Birmingham enjoyed religious freedom in this period is hotly
debated. Some believe that Birmingham was relatively tolerant to nonconformists
and acted as a 'refuge' - the migration there of those who wished
to escape religious persecution being one of the reasons for the town's
rapid development.
