Translation

To all the sons of Holy Mother Church who will see or hear these our present letters, Brother Robert, by permission, Prior of the Cathedral Church of St Swithun's, Winchester and of the same convent, everlasting greetings in the Lord. Know all men that we have inspected the letters of the venerable Father and Lord, Lord William of Wykeham, by the grace of God Bishop of Winchester, the tenor of which is contained in the following. To all Christ's faithful to whom these present writings come to, William of Wykeham, by permission, Lord Bishop of Winchester, greetings in the Lord. Know that we have manumitted and freed from the yoke of all services and villeinage forever, Margaret, daughter of Walter Catewy, wife of Richard at Watere of Evere and all those begotten, or who will be begotten, by her, and all her goods acquired or which will be acquired. Furthermore, that we, William, the aforesaid Bishop or our successors are excluded forever by these 'presents' from truly and legally claiming to have service or villeinage from the present Margaret or all those begotten, or who will be begotten, by her in the future. In witness of which we have attached our seal. Given 12th day of September in the 11th year of the reign of King Richard II by us to the aforesaid Prior and Convent and ratified by us on account of the said reverence of the letters of the same lord and brother, having and granting him by us and our successors what we have ratified, confirmed and approved. In testimony of which our common seal has been attached. Given at Winchester in our chief house on the day and year abovesaid.
