As well as the power to appoint the court at Birmingham by a commission
of Oyer and Terminer, the king had the ability to intervene in the
legal process by letter from London. This document is a letter from
the king at Westminster, requesting a writ to end a process in common
law
against two Warwickshire husbandmen, Alexander Preest and William
Gee, who appear to have been implicated in Stafford's rebellion. The
letter was originally folded in half and bound for security through
slits in the parchment. The discolorations in the left-hand margin
are traces of the seal that authenticated the document.
