Pit girls
Girls employed for surface work in a colliery at Wigan. By 1901, 21.9% of boys and 12% of girls aged 10 to 15 were classified as being in employment. There had been a steady decrease in numbers of children in work during the second half of the 19th century: in 1861 36.9% of boys and 20.2% of girls had been classified as being 'occupied'.
