Mill girls
Work for women, just as for their male counterparts, varied according to region. In the northern textile districts there was an established tradition of female work. Towns such as Bolton and Oldham returned figures of over 70% of unmarried women in paid employment. In contrast, in counties such as Durham, where coal mining predominated, only 16.2% of unmarried women worked.
