'The price of Empire'

'The price of Empire'

They throw in Drummer Hodge, to rest
Uncoffined - just as found:
His landmark is a kopje-crest
That breaks the veldt around;
And foreign constellations west
Each night above his mound.

Thomas Hardy

This well-known photograph was published on 12 May 1900 in the popular weekly Black and White Budget under the caption 'The price of Empire'. By the First World War, military censorship over photographs was sufficiently well organised to prevent the publication of such powerful visual images of death, lest they undermine morale at home.
